France Closes High Schools as Student Protests Escalate
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ordered all high schools in France to remain closed throughout the rest of the week because of large-scale protests by students who were demanding improved schooling conditions, including teacher replacement and an improved schedule. Protests that were attended by as many as half a million people, in addition to teachers and trade unions, led to violence in many cities and tear-gassing by the police force, more than 6,100 arrests, and injuries to hundreds of people. In order to resolve the issue, the government assured to meet the demands of the students by the end of October, while foreign politicians, like Donald Trump, made inflammatory remarks about immigration.
